Are you currently studying in city like Sydney or Melbourne? Are you considering that you might lodge permanent residence visa application in future?
If yes, then you should understand pathways for permanent residence visa after finishing your studies. Most of the people will apply for General skilled migration (GSM) visas which are point based system. You should have at least minimum 65 points to get the possible invitation from the SkillSelect – Expression of Interest. Other pathways are employer sponsored visas.
Employer Sponsored Visas.
First of all you should have employer to sponsor you. Depending on the type of visa, Department of Immigration will need to identify many factors like the company structure, labor market testing, annual market salary rate etc. Also there should not be any adverse information related to the sponsor. Employer sponsored visa like Subclass 186 ENS, Subclass 187 RSMS or Subclass 482 is becoming more and more tougher. Last year, there were considerable numbers of refusals for this category. Also you need work experience to apply for this visa. Some of the other options are to apply for the training visas.
To apply for the General Skilled Migration visa, student will like to apply Direct Permanent Residence which is known as Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa. About every two weeks, they will invite few applicants. The numbers are determined by the Australian Government. Those who have higher points they get invitation. Others waits in the queue.
In Sept round, cut off points were 70. Which means applicants with 65 Score are not invited and they have to wait for the next round. It will be fair to say that most of the time cut off will not go below 70. Also, pro-rata occupations like Accountants, Engineers and I.T.most of the time cut-off will be between 75 and 80 points.
Direct PR/Subclass 189
It looks easier but it is not. You require good English test results, Good work experience and many factors to reach beyond 70 points. Also, your occupation should be in related occupation list such as MLTSSL to apply for the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa. If you think that it will be hard to score more points after completing studies, you should plan now for the other options before it becomes too late.
What are other options?
Other options are to plan for a Subclass 489 Visa or Subclass 190 visa. This visa normally requires 65 points and are very easy to get approved. However to get the State Nomination is one of the greatest challenge now. Most of the State does not give nomination if you are studying in Sydney or Melbourne. If you complete studies in their State or Territory, it will be very easy to get State or Territory Nomination. You can plan for NT, Tasmania or any other State or Territory regional areas depending on your occupation.
